PIERRE BERTON AWARD - BACKGROUNDER Peter C. Newman is the recipient of The Year 2000 Pierre Berton Award. The Pierre Berton Award, established by Canada’s National History Society in 1994, is presented annually for distinguished achievement in popularizing Canadian History. The award was presented initially to Pierre Berton and thereafter has carried his name. The award honours individuals or organizations who have popularized Canadian History through publications, film, radio, television and or theatre. The recipient receives a medal inscribed with his/her name, and a cash prize of five thousand dollars. The 2000 Pierre Berton Award dinner and ceremony is sponsored by The Historica Foundation of Canada. Previous recipients of The Pierre Berton Award are: 1998 - Bob Johnstone, Toronto Bob Johnstone has hosted, "Today in History," a nationally syndicated program on CBC Radio. He is also the author of a best-selling book by the same name. 1997 - The CRB Foundation, Montreal The CRB Foundation sponsors, develops and implements heritage educaton programs directed to youth and young adults. It is best known for its "Heritage Minutes"—60—second mini movies about Canada’s past, aired on English and French television and in theatres. 1996 - Jacques Lacousière, Québec City Jacques Lacousière is a renowned French author of historical books. He is as well known in French Canada as Pierre Berton is in English Canada. 1995- James H. Gray, Calgary The late James H. Gray was a well-known chronicler of Western Canadian History. He was the author of books such as Red Lights on the Prairies and The Boy from Winnipeg. |
