CANADA’S NATIONAL HISTORY SOCIETY - BACKGROUNDER

Canada’s National History Society (CNHS), based in Winnipeg, is a non- profit organization dedicated to popularizing Canadian History. The goals of CNHS are to increase Canadians’ awareness and appreciation of their heritage.

CNHS has established the following programs to meet its goals:

• The Pierre Berton Award, for distinguished achievement in popularizing Canadian history, is presented annually.

The Beaver, Canada’s leading history publication, is published bimonthly. Established by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1920, The Beaver was acquired by Canada’s National History Society in 1994. A cumulative index of The Beaver from 1920 to 1995 is available. All subscribers to The Beaver are automatically CNHS members.

• The Governor General’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History is a national program to recognize and reward outstanding history teachers. The program also promotes the sharing of innovative teaching ideas.

• CNHS provides funding to provincial historical association programs that help popularize history at the provincial level.

• A series of newspaper articles on historic sites and travel destinations is available in both English and French.

• Members of CNHS receive a subscription to the Beaver, discounted prices on Canadian history and biography books and a discount on admission to 15 leading Canadian museums.

Canada’s National History Society is funded in part by The Hudson’s Bay History Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1994 as a result of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s donation of its corporate archives and museum collection to the Province of Manitoba. CNHS operates independently of The Foundation and receives additional funding through memberships, donations and sponsorships.

CNHS is governed by a Board of Directors drawn from Canadian universities and businesses. The current chairman is Joseph E. Martin of Toronto. Laird Rankin is the executive director and publisher of The Beaver.
